The South African Ionosonde Network consists of 4 ionosonde stations located at Grahamstown (Eastern Cape, °S, °E), Louisvale (Northern Cape, °S, °E), Madimbo (Limpopo, °S, °E) and Hermanus (Western Cape, °S, °E). All 4 ionosondes are Digisondes produced by the University of Massachusetts, Lowell Center. A new format for the unified data exchange between ionosonde data producers and users of ionogram-derived characteristics is introduced, dubbed SAOXML 5 to reflect its heritage in the previous.

An ionosonde, or chirpsounder, is a special radar for the examination of the basic ionosonde technology was invented in by Gregory Breit and Merle A. Tuve and further developed in the late s by a number of prominent physicists, including Edward Victor term ionosphere and hence, the etymology of its derivatives, was proposed by Robert Watson-Watt.

Ionosonde Stations Metadata Updated: February 6, Ionograms are recorded tracings of reflected high frequency radio pulses generated by an ionosonde. Unique relationships exist between the sounding frequency and the ionization densities which can reflect it. As the sounder sweeps from lower to higher frequencies, the signal rises above the.

The meeting was held at the During the URSI General Assembly held in Kyoto, one of the Commission G sessions was on Ionosondes and Ionosonde Networks. The oral and poster papers for this session were collected together to form a Proceedings that was later published by the WDC-A for STP as part of their UAG series (UAG).
The method of making oblique D2D skymap measurements for the calculation of the TID characteristics has been implemented in several DPS4D ionospheric stations operating in Europe. This was possible because of the advanced capabilities offered by the DPS4D ionosonde (Reinisch et al., ).
In summary, DPS4Ds have digital transmitters and Cited by: Ionograms and scaled URSI parameters from all three stations are archived in the WDC. The RAL ionosonde has replaced the instrument that was previously running at Slough.
During periods of special interest the sounding programmes of the UK ionosondes can be adjusted to better meet current scientific objectives; e.g.

June The two stations then choose a frequency for the communications link based on the ionosonde results.
This technique is used extensively by the military. A command base will operate an ionosonde transmitter and mobile units which must establish a link with the base will use ionosonde receivers in the field to find the best frequency. Note that ionosonde tracings on a waterfall can take many different shapes; I have shown only a few examples.
The speed at which the ionosonde transmits up or down the band varies with the setup, but it’s an amusing signal to watch as it gracefully and speedily streaks across the band’s waterfall image with its’ meteor-like trail.
Ionosonde Stations in Japan（more info. NOTE There are some time differences (up to sec) between the timestamp and the actual observation start time in the ionograms obtained by regular ionosonde observations with min interval (more info.
An Ionosonde (Also known as a chirpsounder or ionospheric sounder) is a radar that examines the Ionosphere and monitors HF High Frequency ( MHz) propagation conditions by sweeping the HF High Frequency ( MHz) band and receiving the echoes.
Ionosondes sweep from Mhz. They send a line of very short pulses up the band. It looks like a slanted line when observed on a waterfall. Ionosonde Stations in Japan; Station: Actual observation start time (after JST on 22 Apr ) Geographic Latitude (WGS) Geographic Longitude.
View Latest Ionogram. This form allows you to view the latest ionograms available in the WDC databases for the following ionosondes. The times given in the status line at the top of the ionogram are in UT. A basic introduction to ionosonde theory and ionogram interpretation is available. Ionosonde definition is - a device for determining and recording the heights of ionized layers in the ionosphere by shortwaves reflected from them.

The revision includes the photoionization of X-rays in the range below 50 Å and photoelectron impact ionization.
As a solar flux input to the model, we utilize the real-time solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray (1 ~ nm) fluxes of the FISM (flare Cited by: 1.
A radar system for determining the vertical height at which the ionosphere reflects signals back to earth at various frequencies; a pulsed vertical beam is swept periodically through a frequency range from to 20 megahertz, and the variation of echo return time with frequency is photographically recorded.
An ionosonde broadcasts a sweep of frequencies, usually in the range of to 30 MHz. As the frequency increases, each wave is refracted less by the ionisation in the layer, and so each penetrates further before it is reflected.
The sweep frequency record produced by an ionosonde is called ionogram. An example of CADI ionogram. The CADI ionosonde is in use at a network of 5 Canadian stations.
We now have more than a year's data from some of these instruments. Convection measurements at polar cap locations are usually possible using Doppler shift and angle-of-arrival data.Ionosonde Recordings is a netlabel from Detroit Michigan U.S.A.

It seems that little is known, by many radio amateurs, of Ionograms, or of the Ionosonde network, including a huge amount of work done by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. Before reading any further, please note that none of the following is my work.
